Filmmmaker Jeannette Godoy screens her romcom feature film “Diamond In The Rough” on September 22nd as part of the NY Latino Film Festival at the Regal Union Square. Jeannette is a talented writer, producer, director and my lovely wife. She started in the business as a dancer/choreographer, choreographing Sir Mix A Lot’s “Baby Got Back” before making her first commercial for Bridgestone Tires that took her to Cannes Lions Festival over there in France. Along the way, she’s directed dozens of spots for Nike, Bumble, CDC, PetSmart and more. During the pandemic she created a web series “Pure Corazòn” for Bumble, then directed her first episode of television for HBO Max’s “The Garcias”.  A few months later, the studio making “Diamond In The Rough” had her pitch on the film and she was in prep 5 days later. It’s a great story. 

We chat about the commonalities and differences of her many gigs, her latest passion project and documentaries. Of course we plug the NY Latino Film Festival and hope you can make it out.

Filmmaker Tamika Miller is an episodic, award-winning commercial and film director/writer.  She’s directed the NBC television drama QUANTUM LEAP, THE EQUALIZER for CBS and STATION 19 for ABC/Shondaland. We chat about her indie feature HONOR STUDENT, a thriller starring Emmy-Nominated actress Kelly Jenrette (The Handmaid’s Tale) and actor Hudson Yang (Fresh Off the Boat).

My wife and I loved “Honor Student” at the Pan African Film Festival and Tamika has been tearing up the festival circuit ever since. This chat is a masterclass on making your indie film by serving the storytelling with creativity and craft.

45 minutes in, we chat about diversity, all the initiatives and their worth. It’s eye opening and love Tamika’s candor and perspective.

She is currently in pre-production for her much-anticipated feature film UNDERCARD, starring actress/comedienne Wanda Sykes in her first dramatic role. On the commercial front, SHOOT Magazine chose Tamika as a ‘Director to Watch,’ and presented her work at the Directors Guild of America in New York.

Sitting down with Director Jonathan Kesselman was like reuniting with a cousin I’d never met. I’d seen his first film, The Hebrew Hammer, now we talk about his new film “Jimmy Vestvood: Amerikan Hero” starring comedian Maz Jobrani. Maz is hysterical in the clubs, on his specials, so I knew the film would be laugh out loud too.

We chat about developing the film, working with actors who wrote the script they star in, and oh, so much more. Enjoy the trailer, then see the movie.

Thank you Ryan Kunkleman for explaining the mysterious role of the D.I.T. to me! The Digital Imagining Technician has become a critical member of the filmmaking team since the digital revolution. Ryan is one of the best, having done feature films, television and commercials. Can you say “Captain America: Civil War”? He not only tells us the different approaches to his craft in the various mediums, but he knows the history of the gig too.

Working closely with the cinematographer, the D.I.T. helps set the “look” and keeps the photography on point. Please note, Ryan is also a talented cinematographer himself, so he shares his journey of his illustrious career. Here’s a recent interview with Ryan.
