What Does Cinematographer Dustin Pearlman Like To Shoot Most?

Cinematographer Dustin Pearlman stops by the podcast for a great chat. We met at the DGA trying to dispel myths to help up and coming directors, and we ended up chums. Dustin has shot for brands, agencies, promos, narrative and docs. I try to nail him down to what he likes best… Stay tuned. Check out his work by clicking his name and watch this montage:

Director/DP Warren Purfoy

Warren Purfoy is a LA based Director/Cinematographer, owner of Purfoy Lighting LLC and one of the nicest guy working today. He came up in the lighting department working his way to become a lighting gaffer. In fact, that is how I met Warren when he gaffed for a Scooter the Neutered Cat campaign. Now his directing is taking off.

His drive and relentlessness kept him wanting more as he then pursued becoming a cinematographer. Warren’s approach to capturing images and storytelling through the lens is is pure instinct. We talk about his journey to directing, his film “Texas 2 Step” he shot for Director Shannon Hamblin more. I know you’ll enjoy this!

Warren also makes a cameo in my newest course “Directing Cats: Case Study” gives you agency briefs and my winning treatments, plus all production notes. The 17 minute behind the scenes is chalk full of wisdom.

Flattered & humbled to be included in the Creative Conscious Movement series.

My Chat With Commercial Directing Hall Of Famer, Filmmaker Kinka Usher.

There may not be an actual Commercial Directing Hall of Fame, but when there is, Director Kinka Usher will be an inaugural inductee. Kinka won the coveted Directors Guild of America award for his Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials twice, and he has more Cannes Lions that you can fit on the dining room table. Usher directed his first commercial in 1992 after working his way up from production assistant, camera assistant and steadicam operator. He has directed award-winning campaigns for Got Milk?, Polaroid, Nissan, Miller Lite, Taco Bell, Hallmark, Pepsi, HBO and Nike, many of which were featured at the Super Bowl.

As one of my filmmaking heroes, it’s a true treat to have him on the podcast.

Cinematographer Nathan Wilson Says Fix It In Prep.

Cinematographer Nathan Wilson primarily shoots feature films, but still does plenty of spots and promos. So we compare and contrast the workings of them all. Nathan shares his philosophy “fix it in prep”, a mantra we should all embrace. You’ll enjoy his tips on how the DP and the Director can eliminate many potential pitfalls before the camera even rolls. And like myself, he respects the process of blocking, almost an ancient practice in today’s fast moving shoots. Oh, there is so much in this conversation than I can summarize, so dig in. You’ll love this episode, trust me.

What The Executive Producer Does In Commercial Production With EP Mark Androw.

Mark Androw

My guest is the charming Mark Androw, Executive Producer of STORY, a long-thriving production company he owns. Mark has dominated the spot business for many years, and he passionately explains just what an Executive Producer does. The EP, in tv commercial parlance, is the life-blood of the commercial production company. He/she develops the directorial roster, the business end of things and maintains the relationships with ad agencies, among many things.

Mark also loves living and shooting in Chicago, and explains why. Aspiring Production Assistants should know that the AICP has a free PA seminar April 30, 1026 in Chicago. Click here for more info. Or email Mark directly at mark@storyco.tv – crazy nice huh?

The Medium Serves Your Message.

camera IABC

I’m fresh off my stand-up comedy tour of the Middle East. We performed for the troops in Kuwait, Afghanistan and the Kingdom of Bahrain. Crazy times with four hilarious comedians that I now call my brothers. I also shot a documentary by myself whilest on this tour. And sure, I could have taken an Alexa mini, Red-Epic-Dragon-Platinum whatever or even a new Sony mirrorless thingy, but I chose a simple Handycam. Yup. Got her at Best Buy. Furthermore, despite the 4K option, I decided at the last minute to “fuck the 4K” the save the ones and zeros by shooting good ol’ 1080.

It’s just me rambling, and I’ll be back with interviews before you know it. Super excited from filming this once in a lifetime experience, and now to jump off the cliff into editing. Check out my comic pals Don Barnhart, Jeff Capri, Bob Kubota and Slade Ham. You’ll be happy.

Thanks and good to be back with you all, oh, yeah…Commercial Directing Bootcamp NYC is filling up, so do not miss it. April 16th, 2016.

We chat about creativity, synchronicity, quote Paul Newman and discuss everything under the sun as far as comedy and advertising go. Hersh is one of my favorite fun people to shoot the breeze with, hope you enjoy this as much as we did.

How I View My Rate As A Filmmaker.

image

My view of rates as a filmmaker may be unorthodox, but it sure keeps me sane and humble. I see it as shooting for free, and the big payday is for all the prep, production details and post. It’s a healthy attitude that treasures the shoot day as a reward.

Filmmakers are already signing up for Commercial Directing Bootcamp so hurry. Limit 20 filmmakers, because I custom-tailor the program to address the needs of the attendees.

Thank you.

What A Digital Imaging Technician Does With D.I.T. Ryan Kunkleman.

Ryan

Thank you Ryan Kunkleman for explaining the mysterious role of the D.I.T. to me! The Digital Imagining Technician has become a critical member of the filmmaking team since the digital revolution. Ryan is one of the best, having done feature films, television and commercials. Can you say “Captain America: Civil War”? He not only tells us the different approaches to his craft in the various mediums, but he knows the history of the gig too.

Working closely with the cinematographer, the D.I.T. helps set the “look” and keeps the photography on point. Please note, Ryan is also a talented cinematographer himself, so he shares his journey of his illustrious career. Here’s a recent interview with Ryan.

The tech-talk is flowing on this episode, but Ryan makes the knowledge accessible to all filmmakers. Check out this vid and his DP reel:

Please share and enjoy. Not necessarily in that order.

To Sign Or Not To Sign To A Production Company With Commercial Director Tony Franklin.

tony

Fresh off a huge 16 day shoot, I chat with filmmaker Tony Franklin. He started as an art director, working for Target’s in-house creative department. Now he has quickly and successfully transitioned into a full-time commercial filmmaker. Tony shares his journey with us. We discuss the crucial decisions around when and why to sign and why not to sign with a commercial production company, as well as how to measure if you and the company are a good fit. We also discuss craft, and how he gets natural performances out of non-actors. We’re like minded, as we both always want to get a new spot for the reel.

Enjoy this Tony Franklin spot, his director’s cut for Academy Sports:

Commercial Editor By Day, Brilliant Improvisor By Night: Rob Watzke.

rob2_2

Editor Rob Watzke has cut many of your favorite tv spots over the years, but on nights and weekends, he teaches improvisation. We saw his show the night Helen Hunt played along with Rob and his troupe, Schplotz! The 100% riffed show was amazing. Back in the editing bay, Rob deftly cuts on any tool invented, and works with his agency clients to bring out the best in the footage.

We chat improvisation, editing and discuss the birth of the Frankensteinization of mutli-versions of edits. You’ll enjoy this episode.
