Filmmaker Jeannette Godoy: From Spec Commercial To Directing Her Romcom Feature Film “Diamond In The Rough.”

Filmmmaker Jeannette Godoy screens her romcom feature film “Diamond In The Rough” on September 22nd as part of the NY Latino Film Festival at the Regal Union Square. Jeannette is a talented writer, producer, director and my lovely wife. She started in the business as a dancer/choreographer, choreographing Sir Mix A Lot’s “Baby Got Back” before making her first commercial for Bridgestone Tires that took her to Cannes Lions Festival over there in France. Along the way, she’s directed dozens of spots for Nike, Bumble, CDC, PetSmart and more. During the pandemic she created a web series “Pure Corazòn” for Bumble, then directed her first episode of television for HBO Max’s “The Garcias”.  A few months later, the studio making “Diamond In The Rough” had her pitch on the film and she was in prep 5 days later. It’s a great story.

We chat about the commonalities and differences of her many gigs, her latest passion project and documentaries. Of course we plug the NY Latino Film Festival and hope you can make it out.

I also quiz Jeannette on the ingredients of Magic Mind, a health elixir we love. Click my name for your MAGIC MIND discount code: JORDANB – so gobble it up. If you follow me on Instagram you’ve likely seen my unpaid endorsement of this mighty mind power juice.

How Going Off The Grid Improved My Filmmaking.

By going off the grid for just 72 hours, I returned with a fresh attitude towards my work. Look folks, I love the hustle and thrive off it, but clearly I needed a reminder that human connection is vital to a rich, fulfilling life. My lovely and talented wife, filmmaker Jeannette Godoy, showed her film “Free 2 Be Me” to open the Esalen Inspirational Film Festival this week. They also screened “I Am Battle Comic”, so that is always fun. But with no cellular service nor internet, we got to reconnect, have meaningful conversations with other filmmakers about their projects, and just chat with total strangers from all walks of life.

It’s easy to get swept away online, and get lost in work, so please take time to be present every now and then, and connect with your fellow humans.

Enjoy.

How To Get Real Emotions Into Branded Films With Director Jeannette Godoy.

Filmmaker Jeannette Godoy recently crafted 10 short films for Home Helpers, profiling 10 outstanding caregivers, each nominated for Caregiver of the Year. To do so, she and her documentary crew crisscrossed these United States in two action-packed trips. Jeannette shares her diligent prep secrets and shooting techniques. Moreover, she divulges her secret to getting real people to relax on camera. Many had never seen a film crew, let alone be on camera.

I urge you to watch them all, like Christine Villa below, to have a context for this great conversation. Note all of Jeannette’s were uploaded to Youtube in April 2017. The older ones are great stories too, but Jeannette’s have that unique that extra special sauce she brings.
Also check out her Myles Yachts Project:

I love Jeannette madly. As in I am in love with her.

Thanks,

Jordan

What Does A Cost Consultant Really Do? Ron Hacohen Explains The Dark Side.

Part two of my enlightening conversation with production genius Ron Hacohen. Why is it harder to break into directing if your female or a minority? Ron explains he’s actually a “production consultant”. He strives to inform clients of the process, because of the increased efficiencies. We end the talk with his advice for people breaking into commercial directing.

Today, Ron is a Brand Executive Producer/Consigliere at Advertising Production Resources (APR), the fabulous consultancy that helps clients understand the advertising process. He introduces me to the RACI system of accountability, approval and efficiency. Some trippy stuff that shows us how advertising is a small part of the client’s marketing plan, and production a sliver of that. Learn what a SME is. Answer: Subject Matter Expert.

Here’s a spot we did way back in the day.

This is part two of a lengthy conversation we had about the advertising business. It’s a must-listen for anyone breaking into the advertising business.

The Fascinating Journey Of Director Jeannette Godoy.

jeannettegodoy2014

How the multi-talented Jeannette Godoy came to spot directing is quite a fascinating tale. She’s worked on set as a choreographer, a wardrobe stylist, a production designer and even a dialect coach. Then she turned her talents to directing, and was shortlisted at Cannes and plucked for Shoot Magazine’s New Director Showcase for her very first spot. Jeannette brings a warmth and humanity to her work that takes even seasoned directors years to convey.

We talk about how to break into the business, as well as the challenges of being a female in a male-dominated field. And of course we discuss her award-winning documentary, “Free 2 Be Me”, about young dancers with Down Syndrome. It’s a 30 minute film you can watch for free, by clicking the title.

Here’s here Bridgestone commercial that started it all:
