The Medium Serves Your Message.

camera IABC

I’m fresh off my stand-up comedy tour of the Middle East. We performed for the troops in Kuwait, Afghanistan and the Kingdom of Bahrain. Crazy times with four hilarious comedians that I now call my brothers. I also shot a documentary by myself whilest on this tour. And sure, I could have taken an Alexa mini, Red-Epic-Dragon-Platinum whatever or even a new Sony mirrorless thingy, but I chose a simple Handycam. Yup. Got her at Best Buy. Furthermore, despite the 4K option, I decided at the last minute to “fuck the 4K” the save the ones and zeros by shooting good ol’ 1080.

It’s just me rambling, and I’ll be back with interviews before you know it. Super excited from filming this once in a lifetime experience, and now to jump off the cliff into editing. Check out my comic pals Don Barnhart, Jeff Capri, Bob Kubota and Slade Ham. You’ll be happy.

Thanks and good to be back with you all, oh, yeah…Commercial Directing Bootcamp NYC is filling up, so do not miss it. April 16th, 2016.

Again, Commercial Directing Bootcamp hits NYC on April 16th, 2016. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Spots are being gobbled up. Limit 20 filmmakers.

How To Shoot Video That Doesn’t Suck With Filmmaker Steve Stockman.

Filmmaker Steve Stockman is a successful director, writer, producer and now author. His show “Brew Dogs” is a hit on Esquire TV, he’s shot a few hundred commercials, and wrote and directed the feature film “Two Weeks” starring Oscar winner Sally Fields. We met online after I bought his book, “How To Shoot Video That Doesn’t Suck.”

Steve stresses that we’re working in a portfolio business, so he encourages filmmakers at all levels to get out and shoot. He also spells out a “How to” for getting into the reality television game. I encourage you all to buy his book, which preaches story and practical tips. Make sthe perfect gift!

Here’s the book trailer, and just take my word and purchase from Steve’s site.

Nat Geo Wild’s SharkFest Takes Big Bite Out Of SharkWeek w Sr. Producer James Introcaso.

nat-geo-sharkfest-hed-2015

Senior Producer James Introcaso and I sat down immediately after a successful shoot of our Nat Geo WILD promo for SharkFest. Not SharkWeek, that is totally different. National Geographic Channel’s Sr. VP/Group Creative Director Andy Baker offers the companion piece to this episode over at Andy’s The Client Blog, so be sure to check that out. Oh, and of course the AdWeek feature that touts the greatest of the work.

James and I discuss collaboration, ad-libbing and the process of developing of ideas at Nat Geo. You’ll be inspired by how James made his first film driving around these United States, that landed him a job at Cartoon Network.

Huge thanks to the entire creative team at Nat Geo Channels for a great idea, the most thorough development and comprehensive prep. And to comedian Rory Scovel, who brought his magic to the set. Here’s the spot:

Deconstructing “No Way Jose” With Director, Co-Writer, Musician, Star Adam Goldberg.

onesheet

Filmmaker Adam Goldberg‘s new comedy “No Way Jose” is available July 7th on DVD and Digital HD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Just pre-order now, darn it!

It’s a very funny “coming of middle-age” film starring Adam Goldberg, who is one of my favorite actors and filmmakers. Adam co-wrote, directed and stars in this wonderful picture. He also performs original songs and edited the movie. We chat about every facet of his process, from the co-writing mechanics with Sarah Kate Levy, to casting, his rehearsal process, the re-writing, shooting two cameras – you name it. Oh we do plenty of tech talk. You’ll feel like you’re making the film alongside him, through every phase of his creative journey.

Near the end, our talk takes a deep turn when Adam shares what he and his wife Roxanne Daner experienced surrounding this project. This episode is as personal as it gets. Thank you Adam.

Enjoy the trailer, then buy the film.

Passion Over Logic Says “Cop Show” Producer/Director J.D. Amato.

JD Amato

As a longtime Colin Quinn fan, an algorithm brought me to “Cop Show”, a funny behind the scenes spoof of a fake cop drama. Being hilarious and right up my comedy alley, I sought out the show’s producer/director, Mr. J.D. Amato.

J.D. and I kick off with some pre-interview tech talk, discuss comedic character traits and he explains his “passion over logic” theory. Great stuff.

Great guest stars Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan and more populate the web series.

From “Step Brothers” Editing Room to Directing “Walking Man” With Josh Salzberg.

poster227x227

My guest Joshua Salzberg is a busy filmmaker. He began as an apprentice in the editing room of the Adam McKay & Will Ferrell comedy “Stepbrothers”, where he learned the value of testing the laughs before going public. We chat about that process, employed with great success by Judd Apatow, Paul Feig and others, and how that has influenced him making his own films. He is the editor of the Ferrell/McKay produced “Welcome To Me” starring Kristen Wiig and directed by Shira Piven. Opens May 1st, 2015.

His documentary “Walking Man” is avail to pre order on iTunes now, so support Josh and indie film by ordering today. Other dates are revealed when you click here. Shout out to my son, hip hop artist Ben “Benz” Brady for helping with the interview.

Mos Def, Marvin Gaye and Amerigo Gazaway Bring The Funk To Apple.

a2217978452_2

Hip Hop impresario Amerigo Gazaway is one of my favorite music producers. He reworks samples and records so that his songs transcend both original recordings. Furthermore, an Amerigo Gazaway albums tell a story, like LP’s did back in the vinyl days. Moreover, it’s his love for his source material and his authenticity that resinates with listeners. Bombarded with cease-and-desist letters for sampling, it all changed when Apple chose his Mos Def/Marvin Gaye retooling into a “Yasiin Gaye” song “You Are Undeniable” for a commercial. It’s the first unauthorized mashup to be used for a major brand, and a landmark breakthrough for hip hop. Click the song title to purchase & support!

Watch this Apple spot “Jason’s Verse” to hear the funky “Yasiin Gaye” track.

Amerigo schools me on sample trolls, copyright law, his process and the Brazilian “Cannibalist Manifesto”. Near the end of our chat, he turns the tables and asks me about the selection of music for film and commercials.

Please send me your feedback and YOUR questions about filmmaking. I may not answer right away, but I’ll get to all. Hit me up with any filmmaking questions at RespectTheProcessPodcast today.

From Editing Commercials To Directing Them With Mark Nickelsburg.

6575082_300x300

Mark Nickelsburg shall forever live in my heart for dubbing “Respect The Process with Jordan Brady” as the “Rosetta Stone of Filmmaking.” Got to love that. More importantly, Mark has successfully transitioned from the editor’s chair to the director’s monitor. What are benefits and surprises on set, after years of editorial wisdom? I think it’s very interesting path, and thanks Mark.

We both had short films (my “Harold’s Bad Day” and his “Harry Grows Up”) in the Friar’s Comedy Film Festival the same year, but never met. Later, Festival Programmer and filmmaker Eric Johnson suggested we meet.

Watch this short,”Harry Grows Up”; so well done.

Enjoy Mark’s reel at Special Team Films.

Watch Mark’s “Emerald Nuts” spec spot, which fooled me into thinking it’s an actual, for-hire gig. Bravo:

“I Am Santa Claus” Documentary Director Tommy Avallone.

Santa Bear

Who’s lap is your kid sitting on? “I Am Santa Claus” is a wonderful documentary that answers that very question. From an queenly bear Santa, to WWE Champion wrestler Mick Foley, Santa’s come from varied backgrounds. My chat with Director/Producer Tommy Avallone is like two old friends gabbing about filmmaking, despite having just met online. We discuss research, how to choose who to follow, funding and everything in between.

Watch the film on Netflix or buy it from Tommy’s site, click “I Am Santa Claus”, there are many options. Here’s the trailer:

Commercial Editor Tessa Davis Cuts Fast & Furiously Funny.

I got to edit with Tessa Davis earlier this year at Cosmo Street, and she had all the best takes picked out & finessed into a perfect cut long before I could park the car. Editors have commented on the shortened turnaround time but she explains how she’s adapted.  And after the many versions of a spot, which one ends up on air? You may be surprised.

We also chat about women in film, the Glamour Magazine short films done by celebrity female filmmakers and this great Canon short: When You Find Me trailer. Long form is a relative term. I love this two minute piece she edited for HTC with Robert Downey Jr. (see above).

Here’s the EPK Tessa conceptualized, directed and edited. CROWN EPK

Editor Bill Marmor Puts the Puzzle Together Perfectly.

Working with a great editor, like Bill Marmor, ensures your footage will be fully realized into a great spot. Bill explains his process for editing commercials.  We discuss how he finds those magic moments and why he did not like “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, which I loved. We also chat about objectivity in the cutting room, and the pros and cons of editing in the nude.

Click on Bill’s name above to see his fine work. His spot for Secret Deodorant with all the top supermodels is most arousing, because it is well edited. (It’s the ninth on the reel, so watch them all.)

Here’s the trailer for the documentary “Sign Painters” that Bill cut. Quite a different task than editing commercials. Hear why.
