Commercial Director Nema Vand’s Filmmaking Journey from Commercials and TikTok to Features.

Filmmaker Nema Vand has enjoyed an eclectic career in entertainment, from being an extra on David Fincher’s set, to starting his own casting company to presently directing commercials at VaynerMedia’s in-house production unit Eva Nosidam. A turning point came when Nema documented Mike Winkelmann’s (Mr. Beeple) historic NFT sale, which gained him recognition as a storyteller and filmmaker. Now, Nema’s goal is to direct feature films. As most directors start in commercials, Nema sees an opportunity in short form content on TikTok to prove his salt to launch a feature.

Over the next year, Nema plans to create a series of narrative short films for TikTok completely independent of any brands. His aim is to attract an engaged audience and build a portfolio that shows off his storytelling skills. With proof of his abilities on the platform, Nema hopes to land brand partnerships that will help fund his transition into filmmaking. A great idea if ya ask me. Enjoy this Nick Cannon spot Nema directed for Buffalo Wild Wings.

Through his vast creativity and hustle, Nema is paving his own path in an industry not always open to disruption. His journey shows how social media platforms can level the playing field for emerging talent. Enjoy part one of this chat.

My first film, “Dill Scallion” online for rent or purchase and I’m giving 100% of the gross money raised to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, in fact I’ll match it. Roger Ebert called it “The country music ‘This is Spinal Tap'” so that sums it up. All star cast and a great cause.

My Chat With Commercial Directing Hall Of Famer, Filmmaker Kinka Usher.

There may not be an actual Commercial Directing Hall of Fame, but when there is, Director Kinka Usher will be an inaugural inductee. Kinka won the coveted Directors Guild of America award for his Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials twice, and he has more Cannes Lions that you can fit on the dining room table. Usher directed his first commercial in 1992 after working his way up from production assistant, camera assistant and steadicam operator. He has directed award-winning campaigns for Got Milk?, Polaroid, Nissan, Miller Lite, Taco Bell, Hallmark, Pepsi, HBO and Nike, many of which were featured at the Super Bowl.

As one of my filmmaking heroes, it’s a true treat to have him on the podcast.

My spots starring Fiat’s Hipster Santa, flanked by his adorable elves, Jeep’s spot with the guy camping out, and those perky PacifiKids all aired during the World Series game 7, so I was delighted. I’ll post when they hit the web. Do I dissesct those shoot in Bootcamp? Did the Cubs win? Until then, here’s one of my many Jim Gaffigan spots from this summer that still gets played.

Thanks, and go ahead and please share with a mate that might benefit.

Gary Rose Of Go Film Dissects The Commercial Filmmaking Industry With Me.

Gary Rose is the Managing Director of Go Film, one of the top shops for making commercials. We look at the current state of our business and how the game has evolved. I rarely call it “the game” but hey. Gary has worked alongside one of my favorite filmmakers, Christopher Guest, so I get to learn how Mr. Guest likes to work on the spots he chooses to do. Overall, Gary navigates the business with finesse and surely knows how to pick and develop directorial talent.

We touch on his love of underwater photography. I wish you could see his work on the walls of Go Film. Click here for a taste. Oh, that’s a Billy Idol screenshot from a Go FIlm spot, not Gary.

My Chat With “Jimmy Vestvood: Amerikan Hero” Comedy Director Jonathan Kesselman.

Sitting down with Director Jonathan Kesselman was like reuniting with a cousin I’d never met. I’d seen his first film, The Hebrew Hammer, now we talk about his new film “Jimmy Vestvood: Amerikan Hero” starring comedian Maz Jobrani. Maz is hysterical in the clubs, on his specials, so I knew the film would be laugh out loud too.

We chat about developing the film, working with actors who wrote the script they star in, and oh, so much more. Enjoy the trailer, then see the movie.

I’m honored to chat with Director Jeff Gordon, a versatile filmmaker, but one that can say he specializes in commercials with chimps and babies. In our conversation, he points out one “secret weapon” to his success with infants – his baby wrangler.

It was delightful to hear we’ve both worked with a particular chimp named Bella. She is wonderful to shoot with. All in all this is a such great episode. You listeners will certainly enjoy this one.

Commercials to Feature Films, It’s All Storytelling For Director Blair Hayes.

Blair Hayes 1

I loved his feature film “Bubble Boy”, so when I met Director Blair Hayes I was a bit star struck. Plus, his reputation as a commercial helmer is legendary. I’ve only worked a half day with actor Clayton Farris, but I’ve been a fan since he walked in the casting room.
