A Commercial's Shelf Life, Brand Ambassadors & Super Bowl LIV.

Super Bowl LIV seems a distant past a few weeks later, that’s because the shelf life of a spot has diminished with our ever-growing appetite for content. I typically record live, but we shot back to back, so I’m playing catch up. Here’s the Ads of the World list.

Brand Ambassadors still abound, and I stumbled upon one by casting from Netflix’s “Cheer” squad and a little dumb luck.

Congrats to all the filmmakers on their fun crop of Super Bowl spots, all the Oscar nominees and winners.

My friend and RTP alumni Joel Pilger can help you grow your production company, music house or motion design shop with his RevThink JUMPSTART program that starts Feb. 17th, 2020. Click to find out more. Unsolicited plug.

So Why Is Super Producer-Director Judd Apatow Doing A Netflix Stand-Up Comedy Special?

Writer/Producer/Director Judd Apatow is one of my favorite filmmakers, with “Knocked Up”, “This is 40”, “40 Year Old Virgin” and “Funny People” being my personal loves. As the ultimate Hollywood hyphenate, he’s produced dozens of Brady family classics such as “Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy”, the recent “The Big Sick” and the tour-de-force “Talladego Nights: the Ballad of Ricky Bobby”. So why after 22 years would Judd Apatow return to his roots of stand up comedy? Find out.

Judd also shares his method of extracting the most from his entire filmmaking team actors, writers, directors and editors. Never stopping until the film is it’s funniest. I’ve always admired how he’s encouraged his team to write his or her own stories, and that support has brought us HBO’s “Girls”, “Crashing” and all things Franco. Judd Apatow: The Return” debuts December 12th on Netflix.

Who You Gonna Call? Ghostheads! Filmmaker Tommy Avallone Returns.

Filmmaker Tommy Avallone returns to talk about his new film, “Ghostheads”, currently killing it on Netflix. We chat about how he reached out to the director of this fun documentary, Brendan Mertens (my future podcast guest) and his overall involvement. A real inspiring tale for us filmmakers.

Ghostheads are not just uber-fans of the film. They form chapters and raise money for charity, while giving each Ghosthead a sense of community. I recommend the film highly, which has interviews with key cast and crew, including Dan Aykroyd, Ivan Reitman, Ernie Hudson, Paul Feig and many more, as well as with Ghostbusters fans all over the world. Enjoy the trailer:

PS Way too early to announce, but I’ll tell you that Commercial Directing Bootcamp is December 3rd, 2016 in Los Angeles.

This episode is one hour and four minutes.

My Little Film Is All Grown Up, “I Am Road Comic” On Netflix.

ChPoFiyUYAAGnJl

What makes “I Am Road Comic” getting on Netflix so sweet, is that it represents a victory in micro-budget indie filmmaking. Keeping a tourniquet on spending, crafting a story with notable comics and a podcast-based PR campaign, it’s finally paid off.

This is my 5th film to land on Netflix. It all started with “I Am Comic”, but Netflix was just starting out and Showtime had debuted the star-studded docu. Then “Waking Up In Reno” and “The Third Wheel” were added. But those films were Disney-owned Miramax garage sales no doubt. Maria Bamford’s “Special Special Special” is awesome, and it’s still up, and that’s all Maria. So with “I Am Road Comic”, I have 4 films streaming. I’m the most prolific filmmaker no one’s ever heard of.

Thank you!

Commercial Directing Bootcamp will next take place in August. Where? Dunno.

Film & TV Quality Control Demystified With Master Quality Controller Britta Meleson-Bordeaux.

url

When your film is done and before it hits TV, cable or Netflix, your baby must pass the test of Quality Control. My guest is the delightful Britta Meleson-Bordeaux, rated one of the Top 10 Master Quality Controllers in Los Angeles. She breaks down the process and offers invaluable advice for mastering your project.

The tech-talk is strong on this episode, but Britta makes the knowledge accessible to all filmmakers. Please share and enjoy. Not necessarily in that order. Oh, be sure and check out these podcasts, Bananaland with Bob Rubin, The Ralph Nader Radio Hour and The David Feldman Show. Britta and Jimmy have got producer’s hands on both. Why? Because Britta and Jimmy have been true comedy nerds before the term was coined. Please check out Jimmy’s site for more.

How To Get From Production Assistant To Working Filmmaker With Andrew Furtado.

Now-Streaming-Andrew-Furtado

You recognize Andrew Furtado‘s name as the editor my documentary “I Am Road Comic”. He started out as a production assistant, but now directs his own projects and edits films like Clive Baker’s “Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut”. He also produced, directed & edited comedian Kyle Kinane’s hilarious special.

We talk self-discipline, how to avoid being set to stop traffic when you’re a PA and want to hang at the monitor, and more. Be sure to check out Andrew’s terrific podcast “Now Streaming Podcast” all about what’s on and soon to be off of Netflix. Enjoy this trailer/music video for “Nightbreed” he cut.

Here’s the link to “A Ballerina’s Tale” that I highly recommend during the intro of this show.

Four Filmmaking Phenomena With Cinematographer Julian Whatley.

Julian

Cinematographer Julian Whatley proudly proclaims he’s never had a bad day at work. He loves filmmaking and attacks every gig with 100% of his heart and soul. Coming up through the ranks of the camera department, learning from masters like Bob Richardson, John Toll and Harris Savides, he carries on the discipline and artistry he was taught. But stresses adaptability. I’m lucky to have Julian as an ally and friend.

Julian arrived at the RTP studios with four pillars for discussion: The Beginner’s Mind, Disintermediation, The Emperor’s new clothes and the Invisible hand. It’s a trippy conversation steeped in wisdom.

Here’s my bootleg cut of an AutoTrader.com short film we made:

“I Am Santa Claus” Documentary Director Tommy Avallone.

Santa Bear

Who’s lap is your kid sitting on? “I Am Santa Claus” is a wonderful documentary that answers that very question. From an queenly bear Santa, to WWE Champion wrestler Mick Foley, Santa’s come from varied backgrounds. My chat with Director/Producer Tommy Avallone is like two old friends gabbing about filmmaking, despite having just met online. We discuss research, how to choose who to follow, funding and everything in between.

Watch the film on Netflix or buy it from Tommy’s site, click “I Am Santa Claus”, there are many options. Here’s the trailer:
