This episode is an hour and 12 minutes and sponsored by Oso Delicious Hot Sauce, the only hot sauce made by bears. Flavorseeker Fun Pak’s ship Friday’s at 3pm.

My first film, “Dill Scallion” online for rent or purchase and I’m giving 100% of the gross money raised to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, in fact I’ll match it. Roger Ebert called it “The country music ‘This is Spinal Tap'” so that sums it up. All star cast and a great cause.

Director/DP Warren Purfoy

Warren Purfoy is a LA based Director/Cinematographer, owner of Purfoy Lighting LLC and one of the nicest guy working today. He came up in the lighting department working his way to become a lighting gaffer. In fact, that is how I met Warren when he gaffed for a Scooter the Neutered Cat campaign. Now his directing is taking off.

His drive and relentlessness kept him wanting more as he then pursued becoming a cinematographer. Warren’s approach to capturing images and storytelling through the lens is is pure instinct. We talk about his journey to directing, his film “Texas 2 Step” he shot for Director Shannon Hamblin more. I know you’ll enjoy this!

Warren also makes a cameo in my newest course “Directing Cats: Case Study” gives you agency briefs and my winning treatments, plus all production notes. The 17 minute behind the scenes is chalk full of wisdom.

Flattered & humbled to be included in the Creative Conscious Movement series.

Docu Filmmaker Tommy Avallone Returns With "Waldo On Weed".

It’s always a treat to talk with director/producer/editor Tommy Avallone, (picture with Exec Producer Whoopie Goldberg) this time via Skype due to social distancing. Waldo On Weed tells the story about Waldo James Mysterious Dwyer, a six-month old baby boy suffering from Retinoblastoma – eye cancer – in both of his eyes. Seeing their son suffer through the chemotherapy, Waldo’s parents, Brian and Danielle, searched desperately to find a way to help alleviate his pain. The solution: Cannabis. Watch it on iTunes.

Let’s hope we all get back to work soon. I know it’s a source of stress. Stay healthy and creative. I’ll be offering a Commercial Directing Masterclass online soon, chalk full of tips. And thanks – lot of folks listening to voodoo.

Music Videos, Commercials And Branded Content Keep Gregory JM Kasunich Busy.

Gregory JM Kasunich is an award winning filmmaker and commercial director, helming campaigns and short form content, for brands such as Disney, Lucasfilm, General Mills, DirectTV, Mattel, iHeartRadio and wait for it… Taylor Swift. I had a hard time choosing what to post, but love this so much:

Sophie Strauss | Dog Fight from Gregory John Michael on Vimeo.

Gregory’s work is visually stylized, musically and rhythmically driven, often times incorporating elements of animation, choreography, and highly technical camera work. His work generally contains minimal dialogue and leans more into the visual aspects of storytelling in order to minimize the distance between the audience and the subject.

Enjoy!

It was delightful to hear we’ve both worked with a particular chimp named Bella. She is wonderful to shoot with. All in all this is a such great episode. You listeners will certainly enjoy this one.

How To Define Your Creative Space With Spot Director Kevin Donovan.

Watch-Jackie-Chan-Huge-Rhino-Star-in-New-Anti-Poaching-PSA

I met Director Kevin Donovan at a Christmas party and we hit it off. A former agency creative, Kevin learned so much on set, working with great directors like Mark Story and the incomparable Joe Pytka. He’s learned to create a space for himself to deliver the best work, and we discuss balancing serving the agency agenda, while remaining creatively stingy for the reel. A great chat.

I also give my thoughts on the Super Bowl spots. Oh – Get tickets!! February 10th at 6pm West Coast, I’ll be doing my live presentation on being a director of tv commercials.
