Dan Sorgen Is Spec Bank Founder, ACD/CD/Copywriter, Part 1

Dan Sorgen is an ACD/CD/Copywriter that’s overseen brand launches for billion-dollar companies, taught ad school classes, led multiple creative teams, won new business, won awards, won a wife, worked with a lot of really smart people, dinged the culture a few times, and never returned to NY in the winter. He is also the Founder of SpecBank, a source for agency scripts you can make for your reel. Directors, listen up! And this is just one of two great chats!

Dan’s work has been featured in Cannes, One Show, Clio, AdWeek, Creativity, Campaign Live, Huffington Post, ABC News, NBC News, New York Magazine, USA Today, Fortune, NBC, and elsewhere. We did some great work together at Saatchi LA, where Dan works presently. He also teaches the Advanced Concepts Book Shop portfolio class.

VP & Creative Director Matt Sicko.

VP & Creative Director Matt Sicko and I have shot many a campaign together, so I’m very happy to discuss making commercials and finally getting him on the podcast. As VP & Creative Director, Matt also fosters up and coming talent at LaneTerralever, in addition to crafting the funny his bad self. Check out this older Jeep spot we chat about, the first to star Bigfoot as a spokes Yeti. And of course, a Valley Toyota new classic, “Encased”. (Some of you will recognize the plexihut. Thanks Matt!)

Bootcamp is 10.10.2020 in Los Angeles and we’ve got 6 spots left. Masterclass is available online right now for you to level up. Everything is at Commercial Directing Film School. You can always DM me on the socials with questions.

Collaboration And Communication Are Key For Comedy Director Tom DeCerchio.

I’m a longtime fan of comedy Director Tom DeCerchio, so it was great to sit down and chat on this episode. We share a love for communication and holding the pre-pre production meeting so all are on the same page. Tom tells the tale of being a young copywriter and how that informs him as a filmmaker.

Thanks to my son and podcast editor Jake Brady for filling on the intro here, as I got that flu bug kicking my ass!  Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix and Los Angeles and Minneapolis screenings of “I Am Battle Comic” are selling ticket fast. Click on this site for links.

Cheers,

Jordan

How To Have A Successful Career As A Commercial Editor With Shira Ankori.

My friend Editor Shira Ankori has edited some of the best comedy spots on my reel for over ten years now. We discuss working with the advertising agency creatives and why directors need to actually cut.

Timing and collaboration are themes we agree on, so have a listen and share with a filmmaker you love.

Thanks,

Jordan

Rise Of The Freelance Creative Director With CD Jon Shore.

jonshore-5160617513711a6

Both a Creative Director and prolific Copywriter, Jon Shore and I have worked on and off for over a decade, cranking out dozens of comedy spots. After 25 years at one shoppe, Jon headed out on his own and never looked back. Visit jonshorecreative.com for his work.

We chat about collaborating, getting the most out of others, and letting go of certain aspects in order to see a project grow. Jon gives kudos to the Account Teams as well for setting the process in motion the right way. A first on the show. We also briefly wax about the Oscar movies, which may be in the past by the time you hear this.

Here’s a few favoritea I shot with Jon and his former CK Team, starring Pat Finn, starting with a gem called “Flowers” appropriately.

Oh, Commercial Directing Bootcamp hits NYC on April 16th, 2016. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Spots are being gobbled up. Limit 20 filmmakers.

From “Two And A Half Men” to “Scooter The Neutered Cat” with Sr. Copywriter Terry Dillon.

meet-scooter-new-tv-spot-btn

The immensely creative folks at the Northlich ad agency birthed one of the most fun, silly and effective campaigns I’ve been blessed to shoot. Yes, Scooter The Neutered Cat and GiveThemTen.org – from the caring folks of the wonderful Joanie Bernard Foundation. Over the next three episodes you’ll meet the creatives that spawned these spirited spots. Senior Copywriter Terry Dillon, Senior Art Director Laura Gels and Group Creative Director Kerry Broderick all chat about the creative process and joy of doing great work.

We start with Terry, a laugh out loud funny guy that did a stint on “Two And A Half Men” in tinseltown before setting his sights on the ad game. Listen closely to the interview and you just may recognize his silky smooth voice.. stay cool.

Enjoy Scooter “Home Kitty”;

Please send me your feedback and YOUR questions about filmmaking. I may not answer right away, but I’ll get to all. Hit me up with any filmmaking questions at RespectTheProcessPodcast today.

How Ad Agency Creatives Team Up with Drew Wright & Nick Marine.

dodge-challenger-richard-rawlings-big-talker-ss-01

Moments after we wrapped on Friday, I grabbed Art Director Drew Wright and Copywriter Nick Marine for a mini-interview. Both are Associate Creative Directors at Doner Detroit. They’re a newly conjoined creative team, and it’s already crystal clear that it’s a great fit, given the way they crank out quality scripts that sell. I’m grateful for their oddball minds as well as their friendship.

Please help comedian Margaret Cho as she raises money to help the homeless. Here’s her GoFund link. If you buy “I AM ROAD COMIC” this week, I’ll be giving 100% of the money to her fund. Thanks!
