Chicana Directors Initiative Founder & Latina Superhero Comic Creator Kayden Phoenix.

Kayden Phoenix is a Chicana Writer, Director, Producer as well as the Creator of the Latina superhero comic universe, A La Brava. She also founded the Chinana Directors Initiative, which y’all should follow in Instagram. Upon entering show biz, the first thing she noticed was the industry dominated standard- complete with character generalizations. In response, she became a huge advocate for diversity both in front and behind the camera, giving a voice to stories untold.

So cool to chat w Kayden and see how she’s actively helping to even the playing field for the under-represented through her unique and diverse filmmaking. “A big part of my life’s purpose is to give voice to stories as multifaceted, atypical, and diverse as the people we find in the real world.”

Writer/Director/Star of Slamdance Hit “The Sleeping Negro” Filmmaker Skinner Myers.

Writer/Director Skinner Myers is an award-winning filmmaker and film professor at Loyola Marymount University. Skinner wrote and directed four short films: Chimera, The Last Supper, Obscured, and Nigger, while studying film at USC School of Cinematic Arts. I reached out to Skinner after seeing “The Sleeping Negro” at Slamdance 2021. “Confronted with a series of racially charged incidents, a young black man must overcome rage, alienation, and hopelessness in order to find his own humanity.”

The writer/director says he used a “narrative/experimental” approach to filmmaking.

Skinner and I talk filmmaking, his path to directing and how he made this film, of course. Then we venture into a very real discussion of racism in America, racial inequality, and more heavy stuff that needs to be discussed. I know you’ll appreciate Skinner’s POV.

Co-Chief Creative Officer Chuck Meehan, McCann Detroit, Unpacks Their GM Will Ferrell Super Bowl Spot.

My friend Chuck Meehan, Co-Chief Creative Officer, McCann Detroit, returns with his hit Super Bowl commercial in-hand. “No Way, Norway” stars Will Ferrell, Kenan Thompson, Awkwafina and the GM Electric vehicle. Chuck breaks down how it all came to be, how it was shot and what he looks for hiring a director. This ad was deftly directed by Jake Szymanski, who has previously collaborated with Ferrell, and has a standing invite to the pod. Watch the extended cut:

Fun fact: Chuck is our first three-peat guest and the only guest to briefly date Helen. Check the archives and his personal site for more great ads..

Supply & Demand Exec Producer Tim Case.

Tim Case is the Founder/Executive Producer of Supply&Demand. Tim and I attempted to zoom in the early days of the pandemic and ended up chatting on the recorded phone line, but trust me, getting to hear the scope from the EP of the top commercial and music video shoppe makes this episode a dandy.

Here’s a spot by Kacper Larksi, a director we discuss.
