How Copywriters & Art Directors Hire Commercial Directors In The Digital Age With Associate Creative Director Dan Birney.

I shot a ton of fun Buick work with the talented copywriter Dan Birney and his equally dashing art director/partner Dan Councilor of Engage M1, and together we knocked it out the park. You’ve frequently heard me on the show bless the creatives for coming up with the stuff for us to shoot, and here we dive into how the creative team chooses you shall helm their project.

We also discuss the new age of :06 second “snacks” and shooting both vertical and landscape at the same time with my patent-pending two-headed dragon system. Our work played more on Facebook and Instagram than on Youtube. Interesting times. Check out “New Girl” and “Game Night” star Lamorne Morris in our spots, both formats shot at the same time. Optically, each format is unique cuz, well, I think the subtle diffence makes a difference:,

What Commercial Directors Should Know About Their Client With Imagine One Mobile CEO Scott Friedland.

bio-scott

Scott Friedland is President and CEO of Imagine One Mobile, a marketing/advertising agency that helps marketers and brands increase sales and secure higher Returns On Ad Spend (ROAS) – across all platforms, devices and screens. Oh, this episode is plum full of acronyms, so hold on tight. Scott and I go back to when he hired me to direct and produce on NBC’s “Name Your Adventure”, a Saturday morning show in the 90’s, after the network introduced me to be co-host. By bringing me on staff, Scott gave me an opportunity that changed my life. Bravo!

We talk how a filmmaker should know the context of the brand and the brand’s positioning, as well as know where the spot is going to play.

Here’s a clip from “Name Your Adventure” I directed and host. Go ahead and laugh at me:

Mos Def, Marvin Gaye and Amerigo Gazaway Bring The Funk To Apple.

a2217978452_2

Hip Hop impresario Amerigo Gazaway is one of my favorite music producers. He reworks samples and records so that his songs transcend both original recordings. Furthermore, an Amerigo Gazaway albums tell a story, like LP’s did back in the vinyl days. Moreover, it’s his love for his source material and his authenticity that resinates with listeners. Bombarded with cease-and-desist letters for sampling, it all changed when Apple chose his Mos Def/Marvin Gaye retooling into a “Yasiin Gaye” song “You Are Undeniable” for a commercial. It’s the first unauthorized mashup to be used for a major brand, and a landmark breakthrough for hip hop. Click the song title to purchase & support!

Watch this Apple spot “Jason’s Verse” to hear the funky “Yasiin Gaye” track.

Amerigo schools me on sample trolls, copyright law, his process and the Brazilian “Cannibalist Manifesto”. Near the end of our chat, he turns the tables and asks me about the selection of music for film and commercials.

Please send me your feedback and YOUR questions about filmmaking. I may not answer right away, but I’ll get to all. Hit me up with any filmmaking questions at RespectTheProcessPodcast today.
