Leo Burnett Detroit Creative Directors Dan Councilor and Tom Topolewski discuss shooting remotely from the agency perspective. I’d shot Buick with the team (Dan is an Art Director and Tom a copywriter) in February again for the NCAA March Madness, but this time Tom watched the camera feed via zoom and facetimed with us. Dan had his boots on the ground. Now, I love having the creatives with me on set. The energy and ideas bounce around more fluidly. What practices will stick as the pandemic dies down? I shot a ton of fun Buick work with the talented copywriter Dan Birney and his equally dashing art director/partner Dan Councilor of Engage M1, and together we knocked it out the park. You’ve frequently heard me on the show bless the creatives for coming up with the stuff for us to shoot, and here we dive into how the creative team chooses you shall helm their project.

We also discuss the new age of :06 second “snacks” and shooting both vertical and landscape at the same time with my patent-pending two-headed dragon system. Donny Bailey has been the stunt driver on all your favorite action films, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Dark Knight Rises”, and “Captain America: Civil War” …and I was privileged to shoot my Buick spots with him. In fact, it’s all the same to Donnie, for he approaches the work on a shot by shot basis. The consummate professional, Donnie stays calm under pressure and takes charge to execute the most intricate camera moves. Check out Performance Filmworks and their impressive work!

You’ll love his stories of a 26 foot crane used to shoot Mad Max. And I ask is the guitar playing freak really up there playing live on camera? How do you drive alongside Captain America?
