Yay! Our Respect The Process Filmmaking Podcast 400th Episode Special.

Our Respect The Process podcast turns 400 with this special episode. The show’s audio editor Jake Brady and I asked each other 5 questions about doing this show for you all. By the way please follow Jake for interview snippets every week, we call them podsnacks. We ask each other what we like, how we do our jobs, favorite episodes, what we’ve learned and how I annoy Jake. Thank you all for sticking with us all these years. (Sept. 13th will mark 8 years of this show!)

Writer/Director Frank Armendarez Has A Passion For Table Top Directing.

Filmmaker Frank Armendarez is a writer, director, and editor with my pals at Crown Chimp. Frank got his big break into show business as a PA on the set of fitness infomercials, but parlayed that into a solid career writing, editing and directing.  This interview is inspiring – nothing makes me happier than chatting with a director knowing the path they want to go down. Frank is developing his long form projects while honing his moves in the commercial space. Keep an eye on him.

Frank currently lives in Tucson where he focuses his creative eye on Table Top directing as well as regularly enjoying the best 23 miles of Mexican food in the United States. Here’s some fine work of Frank’s. Check it out.

Commercial Director Wayne Craig Part I.

Director Wayne Craig began working in the commercial industry at the bottom. ‘He was one hell of a P.A.” The one major advantage it gave him was that it allowed him to work with some of the best directors in the world during the late 80’s and early 90’s. Finally after shooting two spec spots Wayne got the chance to direct a ‘real’ commercial. Amazingly, that first ad won a Lion at Cannes. Since that time the awards have piled up. Lucky to have him on the show, and I know you’ll enjoy this chat. Check out this spot for Bauer that we dissect and one about boobs.

Producer, Director & “Get Reelisms” Co-Author Christine W. Chen Part 1.

Christine Chen is a prolific film producer, director and co-author of Get Reelisms. I recommend this book for anyone starting out on set. It’s all the filmmaking lingo, some even new to me. Christine’s work incorporates her perspectives from growing up as a first generation Asian-American in Colorado and from coming of age within a culture dominate in patriarchal tradition. Her short films “A Bird’s Nest” and “Ya Albi” were a Top 5 Louisiana Film Prize Finalists. They will be available on iTunes, Amazon, ShortsHD and continue to make the festival rounds. Funemployment, Christine’s debut feature, produced under her banner Moth to Flame Films

Writer/Director/Star of Slamdance Hit “The Sleeping Negro” Filmmaker Skinner Myers.

Writer/Director Skinner Myers is an award-winning filmmaker and film professor at Loyola Marymount University. Skinner wrote and directed four short films: Chimera, The Last Supper, Obscured, and Nigger, while studying film at USC School of Cinematic Arts. I reached out to Skinner after seeing “The Sleeping Negro” at Slamdance 2021. “Confronted with a series of racially charged incidents, a young black man must overcome rage, alienation, and hopelessness in order to find his own humanity.”

The writer/director says he used a “narrative/experimental” approach to filmmaking.

Skinner and I talk filmmaking, his path to directing and how he made this film, of course. Then we venture into a very real discussion of racism in America, racial inequality, and more heavy stuff that needs to be discussed. I know you’ll appreciate Skinner’s POV.
