The Only Thing I Take To Set Directing Commercials.

If I’ve planned my shoot well and communicated with the team properly, I only need my storyboards on set. They’re covered with scribbled jokes, notes and alternate lines I want to try. On set, I’ll magically think of the ad-libs I’ve written. By planning, it allows for the on-set magic to flourish. So, yes I go to work with a simple piece of paper in my pocket. Printed, not on the phone.

Go see “Queen & Slim” and “Ford vs. Ferrari”… listen why.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Jordan

How Director Jeremy Warshaw Gets Real People To Reveal Themselves In His Commercials.

Commercial director Jeremy Warshaw has an uncanny ability to read people and get them to reveal themselves in ways that are surprising and deeply moving. It is Jeremy’s quality of empathy that is at the root of the trust between subject and interviewer.

This is one of my favorite podcasts, because I learned so much about directing real folks from our chat. We talk client-direct work, agency politics and why he brings a “fluffer” to set. Check out his spots on his site or here:

How I Communicate On Scouts Plus Our New Filmmakers’ Sunday Mixer.

I will occasionally direct dogs and cats.

How To Ensure A Smooth Commercial Shoot With Producer Margaret Knight.

Margaret Knight was my line producer this summer on a shoot for The Joint Chiropractic, and things could not have gone better. She came highly recommended and plugged me into her stellar crew of local filmmakers. She’s produced literally hundreds of commercials.

Margaret and I talk about safety, prep, efficiency in filmmaking, beating the heat and more. Here’s one of the dramatic spots we did that fine day.

How To Run A Successful Seed & Spark Campaign With Indie Filmmaker Alrik Bursell.

Filmmaker Alrik Bursell has a fun Seed & Spark campaign running for this indie feature, “The Alternate” and he’s almost funded! Alrik also hosts a fantastic podcast called, Making Movies Is Hard.

We talk about some best practices and why he chose Seed & Spark over GoFundMe, Kickstarter and the like.

Alrik is a big believer in casting diversely and getting more people who don’t look like him in front of the camera, and pledged to that mission with “The Alternate”. Check out this film, donate to his Seed&Spark campaign to help make his dream come true.

GSD&M Group Creative Director Bill Bayne Gets Spiritual About Creating Great Work.

I was fortunate to shoot with GSD&M Group Creative Director Bill Bayne & his partner, GCD Bill Marceau, for two Hilton brands this summer. Which meant free, yummy breakfast every morning, lobby happy hours, and great creative concepts. We sat down the day after our shoot to talk about how the agency collaborates within its walls, what he looks for in a filmmaker, and the rise of in-house production.

Bill’s passion for cultivating the best out of an idea & motivating his teams is similar to how we filmmakers attack a project. Shout out to the my wonderful creative team working under the Bills; Alex DiBucci & Kate Griffith, and agency producer Rolando Romero. Thanks for the fun opportunity.

Listen to the end of the show to hear Bill’s band, The Cold Irons.

Director’s Treatments: Blessing or Curse?

Just me babbling after belting out three treatments for three different projects. Yes, I am fortunate to have such opportunities. But I often wonder why the skill set of making a glossy PDF is needed. I do like that the process of writing forces me to be economical with the storytelling. What do you think?

Music Videos, Commercials And Branded Content Keep Gregory JM Kasunich Busy.

Gregory JM Kasunich is an award winning filmmaker and commercial director, helming campaigns and short form content, for brands such as Disney, Lucasfilm, General Mills, DirectTV, Mattel, iHeartRadio and wait for it… Taylor Swift. I had a hard time choosing what to post, but love this so much:

Sophie Strauss | Dog Fight from Gregory John Michael on Vimeo.

Gregory’s work is visually stylized, musically and rhythmically driven, often times incorporating elements of animation, choreography, and highly technical camera work. His work generally contains minimal dialogue and leans more into the visual aspects of storytelling in order to minimize the distance between the audience and the subject.

Enjoy!

Will Chau, Global Creative Director At Whole Foods Market, Encourages Filmmakers To Shoot Stories By Any Means Possible.

Will Chau is the Global Creative Director at Whole Foods Market, where he oversees the creative output on all brand communications and design. Previously, he was a Creative Director at GSD&M, in Austin. Here’s one of a ton of fun spots they’ve done recently:
Will and RTP alumni Chuck Meehan gave me my first extended commercial campaign two decades ago, for Kia. A series of comedy spots that caused sales to skyrocket & awards to flow. Will has created award-winning work for clients such as BMW, Southwest Airlines, Kia Motors and Kohler. His work has been featured in numerous advertising award shows such as Cannes, One Show, Communication Arts, Graphis, Kelly Awards and The London International Automotive Awards. Passionate about teaching and believing that there needed to be an alternative to the traditional model of higher education, Will founded The Austin Creative Department in the summer of 2011. This was highly influential for me, leading to my Bootcamp. Thanks, Jordan This is 9 quick minutes of inspiration. How Executive Creative Director Chuck Meehan Hires Directors To Tell Better Stories.

It’s our 300th episode! And there’s no better way to celebrate than with my good friend Executive Creative Director Chuck Meehan giving us the straight scoop on commercials and his process for selecting filmmakers. We talk about what makes a great ad, how the production process has been sped up to its detriment and much more.

Our Chrysler Pacifica collaborations starring Kathryn Hahn remain a career high for me.

For “Siren” Co-Executive Producer/Director Joe Menendez It Starts With Having A Point Of View.

Filmmaker Joe Menendez has directed over 150 hours of television and 8 films to date. Joe has filmmaking in his DNA, which is evident in our two hour chat. “Siren” is a fast-paced show, a shooting challenge for any filmmaker, so we dive deep into what it takes to master an episode. This quote says it all:

“I believe the key to good directing is in understanding and knowing how to implement film grammar (when and how to move the camera, when and why to cut, etc). Be it in TV or film. Which is why in my own work, I always strive to meticulously craft every episode or movie I direct. It all starts with point of view.”

Watch “Siren” on Freeform. Thanks Joe for being an exquisite guest!

How To Succeed As An Episodic TV Producing Director With Filmmaker Michael Patrick Jann.

Writer/Director/Producer Michael Patrick Jann returns to the podcast (check out his 2014 episode here) to explain what a Producing Director does, how he pitches to get episodic assignments and so much more. Most enlightening for me as the guy always telling young filmmakers to “put yourself in a box”, Michael embraces his multitude of experiences and his versatility when pitching on new shows. He has so many arrows in his directing quiver, it makes sense.

It’s also interesting to learn from the Producer’s perspective how an episodic Director is hired and what the goal of that Director might be. Shout out to Michael’s mom, who sat in on the interview. Always a delight to see friends and colleagues succeed.

Thanks,

Jordan
