Space Station is an artist’s paradise. It offers workshops, classes and it’s an affordable place to cast, and even offers actors a free place to tape auditions and pieces for their reel. I sat down with David Rispoli and Ben Rovner to hear all about this unique operation, as well as their Space Station Artist’s Initiative. Their mission is to provide an all-encompassing education for the artists in our community. We deliver unique and diverse seminars, classes, and intensives for all ages and experience levels. Our priority is to remain affordable, practical, and inspiring.

Back in the editing bay, Rob deftly cuts on any tool invented, and works with his agency clients to bring out the best in the footage.

How To Book National Commercials With Comedian/Actor Wayne Federman.

Comedian/Actor/Writer Wayne Federman is my favorite comic, and he’s just put out his debut comedy album, The Chronicles of Federman. The box set of three CDs (also available digitally) spans his 30 plus years of unique, killer stand-up.  Judd Apatow, who writes the liner notes, says “Epic, hilarious, inspired and whimsical.” And Mr. Apatow goes on and on. Oh, and I must reveal, Wayne is also my best pal.

Wayne has acted in dozens of national commercials, with a proportionate amount of them being oddly-costumed characters. Regardless, Wayne shares his secrets on how he approaches his auditions and gets booked time and time again. We also chat about how he constructed and edited “Chronicles” himself, so plenty of tech talk here.

Filmmaker Steve Stockman is a successful director, writer, producer and now author. His show “Brew Dogs” is a hit on Esquire TV, he’s shot a few hundred commercials, and wrote and directed the feature film “Two Weeks” starring Oscar winner Sally Fields. We met online after I bought his book, “How To Shoot Video That Doesn’t Suck.”

Steve stresses that we’re working in a portfolio business, so he encourages filmmakers at all levels to get out and shoot. He also spells out a “How to” for getting into the reality television game. New Tricks And Old Fashion Discipline with Cinematographer Alex Jacobs.

Cinematographer Alex Jacobs may be the last director of photography I’ve ever met that learned while shooting actual 35mm film. A young man, he knows all the tricks of the DSLR revolution, but came up through the ranks with the discipline of the camera department. Ours was an arranged marriage on a promo shoot with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, in which we had 35 minutes to shoot. Through planning and communication, the shoot was amazingly efficient and funny.

Yes, Scooter The Neutered Cat and GiveThemTen.org – from the caring folks of the wonderful Joanie Bernard Foundation. Over the next three episodes you’ll meet the creatives that spawned these spirited spots. Senior Copywriter Terry Dillon, Senior Art Director Laura Gels and Group Creative Director Kerry Broderick all chat about the creative process and joy of doing great work.

We start with Terry, a laugh out loud funny guy that did a stint on “Two And A Half Men” in tinseltown before setting his sights on the ad game. Listen closely to the interview and you just may recognize his silky smooth voice.. stay cool.

Reilly, Doug toured this summer with a live show, and it was an absurdist’s wet dream.

Moonlighting In Communist Romania To Producing in NYC With Saatchi & Saatchi’s Radu Olievschi.

I met Radu Olievschi, a wonderful agency producer at Saacthi & Saatchi NYC, this summer and was intrigued with not just his journey to America, but his immense passion for filmmaking. Growing up in communist Romania did not lend itself to becoming a filmmaker, let alone a producer at an ad agency (especially unlikely since the one hour of State-run tv had no advertising), but Radu knew early on it was his destiny. Enjoy Radu’s story and hear the passion in his telling.

“Nathan For You” Co-Creator Michael Koman On Running The Show.

The “Dumb Starbucks” episode of Comedy Central’s “Nathan For You” is an instant classic. Michael Koman is what we call the “showrunner” for the series. Along with co-creator and star Nathan Fielder, Michael leads the writers to invent bits, executes them and then deals with the network. It’s a laborious task steeped in creativity. Mr. Koman’s comedy pedigree includes “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”, “Eagleheart” and “Important Things with Demetri Martin.”

Big Laughs With Comedian Turned Fox Executive Producer Steve Hofstetter.

Comedian Steve Hofstetter produces a stand-up comedy show for FOX. The show is called “Laughs” and it airs Saturday nights. Steve is busy fulfilling his order for the series. Bravo, I say. I met Steve through director/producer Dane Hanson and marveled at how they’re pulling the show together.

Directing “A to Z” with Michael Patrick Jann.

Director Michael Patrick Jann brilliantly draws an analogy between directing and the art of ancient Chinese calligraphy. This is a must-listen episode.

Michael knows comedy. Straight from film school to directing MTV’s “The State”, then onto “Reno 911” and countless commercials, he’s been directing the funny non-stop for 15 years. Today, Michael is an accomplished director of single camera tv comedies, and a go-to guy to shape many a network’s pilot episode. His new series “A to Z” debuts this October on NBC.

We talk about shooting pilots, the joy of winning commercials and the fickle nature of making movies. I wish I’d had this chat 15 years ago, I’d be a way better director. Enjoy.
