Comedian and Filmmaker Henry Phillips is one of my favorite comics on the circuit. His specials and live shows are not to be missed. Nor are his two semi-biographical cult comedy films: “Punching the Clown” and the sequel “Punching Henry”, now on Showtime. He has also made acting appearances on HBO’s “Silicon Valley” (4 episodes) and Comedy Central’s “Drunk History”. His YouTube channel, featuring the tutorial cooking series “Henry’s Kitchen”, has garnered millions of views. Watch the trailer:

Stand-up comedian Maz Jobrani tells us how he brought his character Jimmy Vestvood to the big screen. Maz co-wrote, produced and stars in his hilarious film “Jimmy Vestvood: Amerikan Hero”, and took it to theaters everywhere. We chat about how the limitations of a small budget can fuel creative solutions, as well as shaping one’s own destiny.

Legendary comedian Ritch Shydner is known to my fans as the true heart and soul of “I Am Comic” (Available on iTunes). To three generations of stand-up comics, he remains a powerhouse of pure monology. Ritch and I met in the 1980’s during the comedy boom when I opened for him. Neither of us remember the details or the city.

We talk stand-up comedy, the road, doing a documentary together, today’s podcast circuit, working with comedians, and his book. “Kicking Through The Ashes” is a great read, especially for the comedy aficionado with ADHD. I love it and you need to buy it here.

I’ve known Craig Shoemaker for over 30 years. First as the popular touring comedian known globally as “The Lovemaster”, and more recently as the producer of National Lampoon’s “Totally Baked: A Potumentary”. Craig’s new mission is to spread the healing powers of laughter with a new documentary, “Laughter Heals”. It started when his best friend, screenwriter Michael Goldberg, got brain cancer. Given 3 months to live, Craig and his pals kept Mr. Goldberg laughing and living for over a decade. They did this through love and constant laughter, documenting much of it along the way. Craig’s true passion and mission is to spread awareness about the power of laughter.

He also has a book “Love Mastered” available by clicking the title.

I’ve known Jennifer Rawlings since our days playing the comedy clubs around Los Angeles in the 80’s. She always captivated the crowd with her funny perspective, so I’m not surprised she’s become an accomplished filmmaker. It’s her unusual journey that surprises me.

“Forgotten Voices: Woman in Bosnia” is her first film, and a must see. Made with a camcorder and the desire to expose the world to these stories. Check it out. She then did a Ted Talk on the subject of forgiveness, a story told in the film.
