Live Action Commercials, Music Videos, Animation – Director Alon Isocianu Does It All.

Filmmaker Alon Isocianu and I discuss his many tools as a filmmaker, the importance of pre-viz and possibitly of soon sharing his treatments, among other topics. Alon’s work is highly imaginative, visceral & visually poetic. I’m a sucker for how Alon blends together elements of live-action, motion design, 3D animation and VFX.

He is also the co-founder and Creative Director at REACTIV, a motion design & animation studio in Toronto.

Check out Alon’s stuff. I also posted a cool previz and Square time lapse from Alon’s IG at the bottom here, so scroll down…

How Color Influences The Story With Colorist Clark Muller.

Colorist Clark Muller is one of the most respected artists color grading in the commercial and music video business. Pop over to his shop, Incendio to see his stellar work. We discuss the importance of specialization in an age where we all have the tools. And Clark implores us to explore how the story is to make us feel. That aspect can get lost in today’s world of plug ins.

Check out these music videos we chat about.

Free transcripts, albeit highly inaccurate ones, are now available on my site at jordanbrady.com with the blog.

How To Film An Entire Music Video Underwater With Director J.P. Brennan.

Director J.P. Brennan drops so much knowledge in this episode. Not only does he share how he shot a music video entirely underwater, but he breaks down the four tenets of lighting. Which is also a great name for the episode. It was tough to choose.

Thank you J.P. for sharing so much wisdom! Check out his video for The Trash Mermaids that we talk about.

Cheers,

Jordan

Filmmaker Damian Fitzsimmons Is Living The Dream With Brave Man Media.

My friend Damian Fitzsimmons is a filmmaker, creative director and company owner but he really just enjoys telling stories. Born in Liverpool and now in South Florida by way of NYC, he started Brave Man Media and has been working non stop ever since. Brave Man, as I call it, is a full service shoppe and we discuss what that entails to stay afloat.

You’ll love Damian’s fascinating journey. After being literally paralyzed for months, he rose like a phoenix and now living life to the fullest. I’m also delighted he and the Brave Man team going bi-coastal, so we can hang out more often. We talk about this spot for Diamonds by Raymond Lee, so watch here.

Check out his music video for Raggy Monster.

Thanks,

Jordan

Directing Chimps Vs. Babies With Comedy Director Jeff Gordon.

8db186_eb5dde4f99044054acd3a28f86a03f63

I’m honored to chat with Director Jeff Gordon, a versatile filmmaker, but one that can say he specializes in commercials with chimps and babies. In our conversation, he points out one “secret weapon” to his success with infants – his baby wrangler.

It was delightful to hear we’ve both worked with a particular chimp named Bella. She is wonderful to shoot with. All in all this is a such great episode. You listeners will certainly enjoy this one.

See more of Jeff Gordon‘s fun spots by clicking his name. Oh, We’re still taking Filmmakers for Commercial Directing Bootcamp Chicago. August 13th. This live event will sell out. Sign up today!

MTV’s Too Cheap To Buy VMA Nominated Director Josh Forbes A Ticket.

Josh Forbes

Josh Forbes is a funny commercial director, whimsical music video director and helmer of the horror hit “Contracted: Phase II”. We chat about the differences among his many disciplines of filmmaking. He also tells the tale of being nominated for Best Rock Video Of The Year for “Shut Up And Dance” by Walk The Moon at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Yet oddly, the filmmaker was not invited to the VMA’s, and was forced to buy a ticket. Apparently, Viacom is strapped for cash.

Check out my favorite Josh Forbes music video for Big Data, the catchy “Dangerous”. It’s chalk full of comedians we love like Judah Friedlander, Fred Willard, Josh Fadem, John Ennis.

I’ll be in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, December 19th, 2015 conducting my popular Commercial Directing Bootcamp so sign up today!

This episode is 90 fun-filled minutes, give or take. Please like the show on iTunes.

From “Two And A Half Men” to “Scooter The Neutered Cat” with Sr. Copywriter Terry Dillon.

meet-scooter-new-tv-spot-btn

The immensely creative folks at the Northlich ad agency birthed one of the most fun, silly and effective campaigns I’ve been blessed to shoot. Yes, Scooter The Neutered Cat and GiveThemTen.org – from the caring folks of the wonderful Joanie Bernard Foundation. Over the next three episodes you’ll meet the creatives that spawned these spirited spots. Senior Copywriter Terry Dillon, Senior Art Director Laura Gels and Group Creative Director Kerry Broderick all chat about the creative process and joy of doing great work.

We start with Terry, a laugh out loud funny guy that did a stint on “Two And A Half Men” in tinseltown before setting his sights on the ad game. Listen closely to the interview and you just may recognize his silky smooth voice.. stay cool.

Enjoy Scooter “Home Kitty”;

Mos Def, Marvin Gaye and Amerigo Gazaway Bring The Funk To Apple.

a2217978452_2

Hip Hop impresario Amerigo Gazaway is one of my favorite music producers. He reworks samples and records so that his songs transcend both original recordings. Furthermore, an Amerigo Gazaway albums tell a story, like LP’s did back in the vinyl days. Moreover, it’s his love for his source material and his authenticity that resinates with listeners. Bombarded with cease-and-desist letters for sampling, it all changed when Apple chose his Mos Def/Marvin Gaye retooling into a “Yasiin Gaye” song “You Are Undeniable” for a commercial. It’s the first unauthorized mashup to be used for a major brand, and a landmark breakthrough for hip hop. Click the song title to purchase & support!

Watch this Apple spot “Jason’s Verse” to hear the funky “Yasiin Gaye” track.

Amerigo schools me on sample trolls, copyright law, his process and the Brazilian “Cannibalist Manifesto”. Near the end of our chat, he turns the tables and asks me about the selection of music for film and commercials.

Please send me your feedback and YOUR questions about filmmaking. I may not answer right away, but I’ll get to all. Hit me up with any filmmaking questions at RespectTheProcessPodcast today.

Tim & Eric Give Birth To Editor, Writer, DJ, Comedian Doug Lussenhop.

Comedian Portraits And Performances At The Ice House

Doug Lussenhop is an editor, writer, performer and hip hop sensation. He cut his teeth editing shorts, tv shows and feature films for Tim & Eric (aka Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim), Portlandia, and Funny or Die. Along with Tim & Eric, plus movie star John C. Reilly, Doug toured this summer with a live show, and it was an absurdist’s wet dream.

Doug and I chat about odd timing, developing his own comedy, finding his voice as an editor, and the joys of old school hip hop technology. (see DJ Douggpound). We also share a passion for oddball sound effects. Thanks Doug.

Here’s a episode of Doug’s homegrown YouTube show, Pound Hosue:

What A Production Designer Does With Evan Rohde.

coldplay-840435548

The Production Designer runs the Art Department, and is responsible for fabricating the Director’s dream into a physical world to be filmed. Top Production Designer Evan Rohde does this magically, and it’s a privilege to work with him.

We chat right after wrapping a long day. He explains his dual roles as both a creative collaborator and fiscally responsible department head. I marvel at Evan’s creativity and love how he incorporates digital design plans to show me what he’s bringing to life.

Here’s his music video for Coldplay:

Cinematography Tips with DP Afshin Shahidi.

DP Afshin Shahidi toured Europe with Prince. In fact, one of Afshin’s first gigs in film was a music video for his Purple Badness. Turns out, we have several mutual friends (not just Prince) that he’s shot with, so it was fun to meet via the podcast. His work speaks for itself, but we sat down for a chat nonetheless.

This episode is chalk full of tech talk and praise for collaboration. Check out this Bridgestone spot Afshin shot with Sugar director Chris Smith. It was a bonus spot. The Advil spot was shot on a stage.
