My Little Film Is All Grown Up, “I Am Road Comic” On Netflix.

What makes “I Am Road Comic” getting on Netflix so sweet, is that it represents a victory in micro-budget indie filmmaking. Keeping a tourniquet on spending, crafting a story with notable comics and a podcast-based PR campaign, it’s finally paid off.

This is my 5th film to land on Netflix. It all started with “I Am Comic”, but Netflix was just starting out and Showtime had debuted the star-studded docu. Then “Waking Up In Reno” and “The Third Wheel” were added. But those films were Disney-owned Miramax garage sales no doubt. Maria Bamford’s “Special Special Special” is awesome, and it’s still up, and that’s all Maria. So with “I Am Road Comic”, I have 4 films streaming. I’m the most prolific filmmaker no one’s ever heard of.

Cinematographer Jeanne Vienne is a longtime filmmaking partner. We’ve made literally dozens of commercials, two documentaries and traveled three continents together. I admire how she leads her crew with decisiveness and articulate instruction. Jeanne tells how she lights to protect the actors.

Of late, she’s been shooting mouth-watering table top gigs, so we compare working with fruits and veggies versus actors. We also chat about the trends in cinematography we’ve seen over our years together. Yes, Scooter The Neutered Cat and GiveThemTen.org – from the caring folks of the wonderful Joanie Bernard Foundation. Top 5 Ways To Not Screw Up Your Spec Commercial.

A spec commercial, real or fake, is one you do for free to prove you can make a spot. The big trick is to make your spec spot look not like a spec spot. If it looks spec, it will suck, defeating the very purpose of doing it. Now, every director entering the commercial world needs a spec spot. I’ve seen tons of them, many riddled with mistakes that give away the fact they’re not real. Heed my wisdom, and you’ll succeed.

Here is a spec I made years ago with a script from real DDB Chicago. Almost went to the Superbowl, but almost doesn’t count. It did get me tons of work.

Happy New Year, now let’s make some plans to make some fun stuff. A short film? Feature? Finish that script? A new spec commercial for the reel? Whatever personal project you want to do, first you must set a date and write that date down in your calendar.

My Independence As A Filmmaker With Self-Distribution.

Creative freedom feels so good. By self-distributing my new comedy documentary “I Am Road Comic” directly to fans for $5, I’m showing the world an unfettered work. This episode is just me rambling about my grass roots strategy, and being very transparent with how the money flows. The last ten days I’ve been connecting – learning, reacting and interacting with my film’s audience. Oh, don’t fret. I’m simultaneously pursuing other outlets to bring it to the masses. What is Sound Design and Who Chose That Music? Matt Miller Explains.

Matt Miller is a master at weaving the aural layers in our commercials and often composes original music for them too. Sound design, mixing and finding the right music are the most subjective arenas in all of advertising and Matt is one of the best. He also crafted the stellar mix for my new documentary “I AM ROAD COMIC”, which buoys my camcorder-quality filming. He explains how he put each comic on his/her own track. Insane.

We chat about truncated schedules that plague the process, how he manages a room of clients and agency folks while working, and offers advise to people that want to get into the enchanting world of audio post production. Warning: great tech talk.
