Geico Gecko Godfather, Executive Creative Director Randy Belcher.

Randy Belcher, Exec Creative Director at Strategic America, is best known in advertising circles as the co-creator of the Geico Gecko from his days at the Martin Agency. Randy and I did some fun work years after that for Cox Cable and more. Enjoy this chat and hear the perspective from a seasoned creative. Here’s a of the spots I did with Randy, followed by a recent Geico spot neither of us made.

How To Book National Commercials With Comedian/Actor Wayne Federman.

aspecialthing_records_063

Comedian/Actor/Writer Wayne Federman is my favorite comic, and he’s just put out his debut comedy album, The Chronicles of Federman. The box set of three CDs (also available digitally) spans his 30 plus years of unique, killer stand-up.  Judd Apatow, who writes the liner notes, says “Epic, hilarious, inspired and whimsical.” And Mr. Apatow goes on and on. Oh, and I must reveal, Wayne is also my best pal.

Wayne has acted in dozens of national commercials, with a proportionate amount of them being oddly-costumed characters. Regardless, Wayne shares his secrets on how he approaches his auditions and gets booked time and time again. We also chat about how he constructed and edited “Chronicles” himself, so plenty of tech talk here.

Here’s Wayne and Kenny Rogers for Geico:

Here’s a Toyota spot I directed Wayne in called “Charades“.

My next Commercial Directing Bootcamp will be in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, December 19th, 2015 – so sign up for Commercial Directing Bootcamp today! Read the reviews on this site. Pretty flattering. #blush.

The Perlorian Brothers Brilliantly Blend Absurdity With Humanity.

The Perlorian Brothers make comedy spots that I wish I’d made. Admittedly, I was giddy interviewing the dynamic directing duo from the Great White North, because I’ve held them in such high regard since I began, and because Canadians are genetically funnier than most. Ian Letts and Michael Gelfand sat down with me at the noisy airport cafe to discuss how they make the magic.

Ian and Michael started as agency creatives, and offer up great advice for creatives choosing a director. We chat about finding the humanity amidst the absurdity, casting, and sometimes subverting the process if it’s getting in the way of greatness.

Here’s a sampling of their work we talk about:
