How “I Am Battle Comic” Theatrical Premiere Raised Money For MilitaryFamily.org.

The World Premiere of “I Am Battle Comic” was a smashing success, thanks to the fine citizens of Detroit. Especially the advertising community, as creatives and producers came out in droves. Huge shout out to Marc Henretta of Jeep, Sterling Doak of Fender and my longtime friend Chuck Meehan of Doner for moderating the Q&A.

Midday the great review came out from the discerning Sean L. McCarthy, aka the comics’ comic. Read it here.

Comedians Tammy Pescatelli and Slade Ham, both in the film, showed up to make for a funny Q&A. We raised well over $4,000 for National Military Family Association, with many donations made on the spot. Way to go Detroit!

What A Motion Designer And 3D Artist Does With Laundry’s Uber-Talented PJ Richardson.

Animation Designer & 3D Artist PJ Richardson co-launched Laundry, a creative studio to help brands, agencies and networks bring their ideas to life. You’ll see they deliver a high end aesthetic and polished that is most impressive to the eye. Of course, we chat about how Laundry works and how PJ loves to collaborate.

He also shares his journey from design school to graffiti to advertising. He and his Laundry team espouse the theory of giving people not just want they want, but always present a “wild card” option. Man, do I like his thinking and his work. Check out laundrymat.tv or pjrichardson.tv for groovy stuff for “The Simpsons”, “Sausage Party” and Kevin Hart’s latest movie. I love this spot:

Acclaimed Film Producer Miranda Bailey On Producing “Don’t Think Twice”.

217cbb_531bc1867e1d4dbeab579dffc0be2716

Miranda Bailey is a prolific film producer, actress and director. Currently, she’s got two wonderful films in theaters, “Swiss Army Man” and “Don’t Think Twice”, the latter opening wide this weekend. Go see it. It stars Keegan Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Tami Sagher, Chris Gethard, Kate Micucci and the film’s writer/director Mike Birbiglia. It’s funny, sad, heartfelt and the best look at the world of improvisational comedy ever.

Miranda has her own production company, Cold Iron Pictures, and started a distribution company, The Film Arcade. Click the words. She’s the real deal.

The last half of our chat reveals that I am indeed an old fashioned sexist. Eye opening, as we delve into the topic of gender inequality. Truthfully, I wanted to leave that alone and just talk to Miranda as a producer, but felt it was needed so we explore and shed a little light. Enjoy the trailer, then buy tickets:

Enjoy. Share. See the film. Thank you!!

The Medium Serves Your Message.

camera IABC

I’m fresh off my stand-up comedy tour of the Middle East. We performed for the troops in Kuwait, Afghanistan and the Kingdom of Bahrain. Crazy times with four hilarious comedians that I now call my brothers. I also shot a documentary by myself whilest on this tour. And sure, I could have taken an Alexa mini, Red-Epic-Dragon-Platinum whatever or even a new Sony mirrorless thingy, but I chose a simple Handycam. Yup. Got her at Best Buy. Furthermore, despite the 4K option, I decided at the last minute to “fuck the 4K” the save the ones and zeros by shooting good ol’ 1080.

It’s just me rambling, and I’ll be back with interviews before you know it. Super excited from filming this once in a lifetime experience, and now to jump off the cliff into editing. Check out my comic pals Don Barnhart, Jeff Capri, Bob Kubota and Slade Ham. You’ll be happy.

Thanks and good to be back with you all, oh, yeah…Commercial Directing Bootcamp NYC is filling up, so do not miss it. April 16th, 2016.

How To Have A Blossoming Director-Cinematographer Relationship w DP Mateo Londono.

1a24797

For the last 10 years or so, Cinematographer Mateo Londono and I have made dozens of great spots together. Sometimes, we barely talk on set, and instead smile in agreement. After all, we’ve worked everything out ahead of time, so the shoot day is about executing that plan, and I am free to focus on performances while Mateo captures it.

We talk about how style is informed by the creative, of course. And as Mateo has a feature career, we discuss the differences between shooting movies and commercials. Basically, this is another fun chat between two old friends, and I promise you’ll enjoy it.

A Practical Guide To Loving Acting w Actor/Writer/Director Jack Plotnick.

jack_plotnick

Jack Plotnick’s philosophy towards creativity is so spiritually aligned with my own, that I think we might have been separated at birth. I’ve directed Jack in a few commercials, marveled at his acting chops in films like “Meet The Fockers”, “Rubber” and “Gods And Monsters”. Then I discovered his directorial debut, the feature film “Space Station 76”, an intergalactic drama with comedic undertones that I love.

Jack and I chat about creating one’s own content, setting a date to make it happen, and giving yourself boundaries, a theme that’s come up on this show a few times lately. Most of all, Jack rejects the negativity that can hound us in the biz. In his words, “the world is going to rain shit down on you sometimes, but keep going cuz it’s also going to give you great gifts along your way.” Enjoy and check out “Space Station 76” on iTunes. And here’s a link to Jack’s YouTube channel.
Enjoy the trailer to “Space Station 76”.

My Favorite Millennial Writer/Designer/Filmmaker Grant Spanier.

GrantSpanier1

Obviously I like Grant Spanier since he had me on his wonderful podcast, 10,000 Hours. Moreover, I like his enthusiasm, that get ‘er done attitude and his fresh, collaborative nature. See below for his dope music video for “Weightless” by the DJ known as Vaski (Grant directed with his pal Jake Woodbridge). It shows his wonderful whimsy, while his design work showcases that clean look I love. We chat about self-discipline, balancing a multi-faceted creative life, and Grant politely schools me on the Sharing Economy as it pertains to creative learning. A great chat I found inspiring for filmmakers of all ages. Thank you Grant! And y’all check out his site.

Director Joe Wladyka Shares How His Film “Manos Sucias” Got Made And Why Spike Lee’s Gotta Have It.

Manos-leammle

Director Joe Wladyka has an engaging film out called “Manos Sucias”. It’s the suspenseful story of two Columbian brothers on a life or death drug run up the Columbian coast. The film is chalk full of social commentary on Afro-Columbian racism, extreme poverty, the inescapable drug trafficking and even brotherly love, but I love the film because it’s a gripping story about how far people will go to survive. See it now.

Thank you Joe for a great chat, the tech talk and your generosity in sharing the craft of filmmaking with the people of Buenaventura. You’ll hear how he and his filmmaking team taught the locals, and hired a mostly Buenaventurian crew.

Filmmaking Tales From Sr. VP/Director of Content Production Tom Gibney, The Buntin Group.

tom_gibney_color_rev1

While visiting Nashville, I chatted with Tom Gibney, Sr. VP/Director of Content Production at the Buntin Group. He’s a well-respected industry veteran and a super nice guy. We discuss that while it’s now called “content”, it’s still telling stories for clients. Tom feels ultimately the digital tools have helped the filmmaking process, but not without a price. And Tom’s loyalty to his Nashville filmmakers is admirable; he shoots with local crews when possible.

Tom and I share a childlike wonder for shooting table top, the filmmaking process, as well as the philosophy for new directors to “shoot, shoot, shoot”.

Here’s a cool spot from the Buntin Group for Chinet that we discuss in this episode:

Senior Art Director Laura Gels Is All About The Details.

AAEAAQAAAAAAAAHaAAAAJDFiYmEzNDdmLTRmMWYtNDVlNC1hZTk5LTgzNzBlZDY0ZGRkNw

What’s comforting about filming with Laura Gels, Senior Art Director at Northlich, is having her gives me a second pair of eyes, scrutinizing the details in order to make the work great. She lives with each project for a year, so she wants it right. Respect. We’ve collaborated on three spots, and she’s a director’s dream to work with. I grabbed Laura from her print shoot and we chat about the various phases of joy that come with the process.

This is the third interview of three with the wildy creative folks behind Scooter the Neutered Cat for GiveThemTen.org – from the caring folks of the wonderful Joanie Bernard Foundation.

Filmmaker Deon Taylor Directs Danny Glover In “Supremacy”.

406x600_2

I got a sneak peek at Deon Taylor‘s new film “Supremacy” starring Danny Glover, Joe Anderson, and Dawn Olivieri (“House of Lies”). It’s about a white supremacist just out of the clink. He shoots a cop, goes on the lamb, and invades Danny Glover’s house. Drama and self-examination ensue. Really well-made film, regardless of just a one million dollar budget. Deon shares his approach, choices and passion in this wonderful chat. Support this filmmaker. See “Supremacy” which opens Friday, January 30th, 2015. Click here for showtimes.

February 10th at 6pm West Coast, I’ll be doing a live presentation on being a director of tv commercials. Buy your tickets now for February 10th at 6pm West Coast, “Confessions of a Commercial Filmmaker” on StageIt. Live Q&A. It will sell out.
