Cinematographer Dustin Pearlman stops by the podcast for a great chat. We met at the DGA trying to dispel myths to help up and coming directors, and we ended up chums. Dustin has shot for brands, agencies, promos, narrative and docs. I try to nail him down to what he likes best… Stay tuned. Check out his work by clicking his name and watch this montage:

Cinematographer Darrell Wonge’s Journey From The Basketball Court To Behind The Camera.

Cinematographer Darrell Wonge tells his story from player professional basketbaall around the globe to getting hurt and watching YouTube to learn a new craft. And he’s mastering it fast. Darrell’s quickly gained extensive experience in fashion, beauty, alcohol and sports. Competent in capturing high quality images while displaying confidence and professionalism. Being a former professional athlete that has traveled around the world, he brings that same work ethic to every project as a filmmaker. Director/Cinematographer Jimmy Matlosz Has Worked Almost Every Job On Set.

Director Cinematographer Jimmy Matlosz is a filmmaker, a storyteller, and a cinematographer who directs great spots, making him a bit of a swiss army filmmaker, if you will.  He’s shot stop motion, high speed and IMAX, as well as working in almost every department on set.

Check out his stuff, especially the LeBron spot for Nike. I love Jimmy’s visual aesthetics and clean look, and the performances are authentic.

Thanks,

Jordan

Oso Delicious is back, and we give $1 for every bottle to MilitaryFamilies.org so go ahead and grab some.

Cinematographer Nathan Wilson Says Fix It In Prep.

Cinematographer Nathan Wilson primarily shoots feature films, but still does plenty of spots and promos. So we compare and contrast the workings of them all. Nathan shares his philosophy “fix it in prep”, a mantra we should all embrace. You’ll enjoy his tips on how the DP and the Director can eliminate many potential pitfalls before the camera even rolls. And like myself, he respects the process of blocking, almost an ancient practice in today’s fast moving shoots. Oh, there is so much in this conversation than I can summarize, so dig in. You’ll love this episode, trust me.

Here’s a great promo for Kong Skull Island with Samuel L. Jackson and Jeffrey Ross. And this boxing film I love.

Morphing From Photographer Into Busy Filmmaker With Kristyna Archer.

Filmmaker Kristyna Archer has a style and aesthetic I admire: it’s crisp, bold and colorful. A busy professional photographer, we chat about how her career has morphed into more and more directing gigs, as she explores new outlets of creativity. She also is the creator of the MergeLeft Podcast, a podcast exploring art and commerce thru conversations with shape-shifters in arts, media, advertising, and entertainment, which I am an upcoming guest on. Soon people. Check out this spot we discuss at length.

Four Filmmaking Phenomena With Cinematographer Julian Whatley.

Julian

Cinematographer Julian Whatley proudly proclaims he’s never had a bad day at work. He loves filmmaking and attacks every gig with 100% of his heart and soul. Coming up through the ranks of the camera department, learning from masters like Bob Richardson, John Toll and Harris Savides, he carries on the discipline and artistry he was taught. But stresses adaptability. I’m lucky to have Julian as an ally and friend.

Julian arrived at the RTP studios with four pillars for discussion: The Beginner’s Mind, Disintermediation, The Emperor’s new clothes and the Invisible hand. It’s a trippy conversation steeped in wisdom.

Here’s my bootleg cut of an AutoTrader.com short film we made:

What The Gaffer Does With Pat Grosswendt.

200908260634524788

Veteran Gaffer Pat Grosswendt has taught me so much about lighting during the dozens of commercials we’ve made together. (Click his name for credits from “Cabin Boy” to “Gosford Park” to “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) Have a listen and you’ll learn the history, the mindset and key technical aspects of being the one on set that shapes the light. Pat gives his take on the changes in the technology, but stresses it’s the story that always effects the lighting approach the most, regardless of the toys. Enjoy his fun tips too, like dumpster diving for diffusion, or use bubble wrap.

Scroll down to see some interviews Pat has done. Did I mention he and his partner invented LitePanels? So much more than a gaffer, he’s a mentor.

Just a few tickets left!! February 10th at 6pm West Coast (9pm East Coast), I’ll be doing my live presentation on being a director of tv commercials. Buy your tickets now for February 10th at 6pm West Coast, “Confessions of a Commercial Filmmaker” on StageIt. Live Q&A. It will sell out.

Pat sharing the knowledge:

A great interview on lighting basics.
